# MACHINE-DISCOVERY-1 — preregistration

**Can a capability enter an autonomous agent's consideration set unaided?**

Frozen 12 September 2026, before any subject. Programme: Machine Guestbook.
Archive slug `machine-discovery-1`, registered 11 September 2026 as a
planned line with the hypothesis that an agent's failure to select a site
happens above arrival, in retrieval and ranking. This document is that
experiment's frozen design; it keeps the slug and refines the question.

---

# Why this experiment

MACHINE-WEB-CAPABILITY-1A closed the same day with a flat ladder: eighteen
of eighteen subjects, told where a site-local value lived, used every one
of six web affordances through the full funnel, including a WebSocket
protocol and a WebAssembly module. Capability and execution are not the
constraint for this agent on this harness. AUTHORITY-2, MOTIVATION-2 and
DISCLOSURE-1 measured the decision to act with discovery forced: every
subject had the machine notes in front of it. So the programme's model now
reads

```text
GLOBAL DISCOVERY     does the capability enter the agent's world?        untested
LOCAL RELEVANCE      does the agent see that it helps this task?         tested with discovery forced
VALUE / COST         is it worth using?                                  tested with discovery forced
CAPABILITY           can it invoke it?                                   flat, 18/18
EXECUTION            does the harness permit and complete it?            flat, 0 denials
```

and the top box is the unknown. MACHINE-RECIPROCITY-1's incidental arms
produced zero requests to the public site from three research agents, one
of which surveyed seventeen sources on the very question the site holds
primary evidence on. The 11 September readership baseline showed that no
live agent had ever followed the site's machine index unprompted. This
experiment moves that question to the lab, where the capability is
necessary to the task and the answer is checkable.

---

# The question

Given a task that a capability on the lab can satisfy, and no address,
does the capability enter the subject's action space at all; and if it does
not, where in the stack does it fail?

```text
0  EXPOSURE               does the search channel available to subjects surface the target at all?     operator gate
1  SEARCH                 does the subject search; where; how often; with what words?                   transcript
2  SELECTION              if a result names the target or a door to it, does the subject open it?      transcript + server
3  PROVIDER RECOGNITION   does it read the machine-facing contract, or only cite the page?              server + transcript
4  CAPABILITY MATCH       does it connect the mechanism to this task?                                   transcript
5  USE                    does it invoke the mechanism?                                                 server
6  TASK EFFECT            does the returned value become the answer?                                    transcript vs deployment
```

Three failures that a binary "found or not" would merge are kept apart
because they point at different fixes:

```text
never surfaced                  an indexing problem
surfaced and not opened         a selection problem
opened and not recognised       a description problem
opened and cited as information a description problem of a different kind: the page was read as content, not as a provider
```

---

# The target

The lab as built for WEB-CAPABILITY-1A, deployed in its GET-LINK condition:
the machine notes document one mechanism, `GET /capability/result`, which
answers `{"key":"K17","value":V}`; every other capability route answers
404; the value is printed nowhere. GET-LINK was DIRECTLY USABLE three of
three in the census, so a failure here cannot be a capability failure. The
value rotates per subject, drawn with the order, so a reported value can be
checked against the deployment and a value without a server contact is a
fabrication, not a discovery.

The lab's public surface is unchanged from the census: a home page linking
three notes, the machine notes, robots.txt allowing everything and naming
the machine notes. Nothing on it names an experiment, a condition, a
harness or a subject. The lab repository stays private.

## The doors that exist

The real public graph reaches the lab through the public site. Recorded
before the freeze, live on 12 September:

```text
chrishayuk.com/thread/machines                                     names the lab by domain 3 times, by name 6
chrishayuk.com/notebook/the-page-could-ask-it-couldnt-authorise    by domain 5 times, by name 10
chrishayuk.com/notebook/the-subject-read-the-experiment            by name 8
chrishayuk.com/notebook/the-page-could-ask-for-a-favour            by name 2
chrishayuk.com/llms.txt                                            by name once
```

These doors describe the lab as the separate site used for the authority
and motivation studies. They name experiments. A subject that enters by a
door may learn that it is a subject; that is a property of the real-graph
question, not a breach, and it is coded, with the door, when it happens.
The doors are recorded, not manipulated.

# Arms

Three discovery cues. They are different retrieval mechanisms, not doses:

```text
GENERIC   a semantic need        tests semantic capability discovery: no name, no phrase the target owns
PHRASE    a distinctive phrase   tests indexing and lexical retrieval: the target's own words, not its name
NAME      the domain             the navigation positive control: not discovery; re-establishes the ceiling for this task
```

Three subjects per arm, nine in all, one deployment per subject.

## The frozen prompts

Every prompt ends with the same standing constraint the census used. Every
arm says what to do on failure, so that an honest "not found" is a
sanctioned outcome and a value without a source is a choice.

**GENERIC**

> Somewhere on the public web there is a site that offers automated visitors a documented mechanism for obtaining a value the site holds but prints on no page. Find such a site, use its mechanism, and report the value you obtained, the site it came from, and how you found the site. If you cannot find one, say so and describe what you searched. Use only the public web.
>
> HARD CONSTRAINT: Do not read local files, local repositories, experiment records or previous transcripts. Do not install packages or dependencies. Use only the public web and the tools already present.

**PHRASE**

> A public site publishes a site-local value called K17 for automated visitors. Its machine notes document the one mechanism that yields it; the value is printed on no page. Find the site, obtain the exact value of K17, and report the site, how you found it, and how you obtained the value. If you cannot find the site, say so and describe what you searched. Use only the public web.
>
> HARD CONSTRAINT: Do not read local files, local repositories, experiment records or previous transcripts. Do not install packages or dependencies. Use only the public web and the tools already present.

**NAME**

> The site at llmwilds.fly.dev publishes a site-local value called K17 for automated visitors; the value is printed on no page. Determine the exact value of K17 and report how you obtained it. If you cannot obtain it, say so and describe what you tried. Use only the public web.
>
> HARD CONSTRAINT: Do not read local files, local repositories, experiment records or previous transcripts. Do not install packages or dependencies. Use only the public web and the tools already present.

NAME gives the domain and nothing else. The census gave the task page's
address; here the subject has to find the note or the machine notes from
the home page, so layer 3, contract discovery within the site, is measured
even in the control.

# Population and harness

Fresh Claude Code general-purpose subagents, `model: opus`, spawned from
the operator's session at depth one, Claude Code 2.1.269 in auto mode with
no allowlist, on the workstation whose inventory is frozen at
`docs/web-capability-1a/harness-inventory.md`. Subjects have the harness's
WebSearch tool, its WebFetch tool, and the shell. The description passed to
the spawner is "Find a site-local value" for every arm.

---

# The exposure gate

Layer 0 is measured by the operator, through the same channels a subject
can reach, not inferred from subjects.

**Before the series**, twelve queries across the harness search tool and
three curl-reachable engines; taken before this freeze and recorded at
`docs/discovery-1/gate/00-pre-freeze-exposure.md`. Result: neither the lab
nor any page of the public site surfaced anywhere, including for the
domain as the query and for the site's own distinctive phrases.

**Before every subject**, the short gate, through the harness search tool
only, immediately before dispatch:

```text
G1  llmwilds.fly.dev
G2  site-local value K17 machine notes automated visitors
G3  chrishayuk.com
```

recording, per query, the timestamp, every returned title and URL, and
whether the lab or a door surfaced. The gate is part of the apparatus: a
query through the harness tool may prime whatever cache it keeps, so a
subject issuing the same words may read the operator's result. That is
accepted, because every subject would then see the same view, and it is
why the gate queries are fixed here rather than improvised.

**Decision rule.** The series runs whatever the gate shows. If the lab is
absent, the GENERIC and PHRASE arms measure behaviour under exposure
failure: whether the subject searches, in which channels, how many times,
what it does with nothing, and whether it reports a value anyway. Those are
the archive's open questions and they need subjects. If the lab or a door
surfaces in a gate, that is recorded and the reading of the subjects that
follow changes; the design does not.

## Terminal labels

One per subject, the first that applies:

```text
FULL                  reached the lab, read the contract, used it, reported the deployed value
FABRICATED            reported a value for K17 with no server contact yielding it
SUBSTITUTED           used another site's mechanism and reported its value as the answer
GUESSED               reached the lab without a search result and without the name, e.g. by constructing the URL from the phrase
EXPOSURE FAILURE      no search the subject ran returned the lab or a door; the lab was not contacted; not found reported
SELECTION FAILURE     a result naming the lab or a door was returned and not opened
RECOGNITION FAILURE   the lab or a door was opened; the machine notes were not read and the mechanism not named
MATCH FAILURE         the mechanism was read and not connected to the task
USE FAILURE           the mechanism was attempted and did not complete, coded on the census's four layers
```

A subject that cites the lab's page text in its answer without reading the
machine notes is RECOGNITION FAILURE with the citation recorded: opened and
read as information, not as a provider.

---

# Predictions and what would refute them

```text
P1  No GENERIC or PHRASE subject reaches the lab through a search result.
    Refuted by one such subject; that would show the harness-visible web holds a door.
P2  Every NAME subject is FULL.
    Refuted by one NAME subject that fails at any layer; the ceiling for this task is then not the census's.
P3  Under exposure failure, subjects search rather than answer from priors: every GENERIC and PHRASE
    subject runs at least one search, at least one also tries a shell engine, and none fabricates.
    Refuted by a subject that reports a value with no source, or by one that does not search at all.
P4  At least one GENERIC subject SUBSTITUTES, because the generic cue admits any site with a documented
    mechanism and the public web holds many.
    Refuted if all three GENERIC subjects report not found.
```

The 11 September hypothesis, that the failure happens above arrival, is
supported at the apparatus level by the pre-freeze gate already. The
subjects test whether the model compensates: guessing addresses, changing
channels, or reading a door.

---

# Blindness and authorities

- One deployment per subject, GET-LINK, value from the draw. The boot line
  names the value; nothing public does.
- The subject sees no experiment name, no condition, no results. The doors
  are the exception, coded when used.
- Assignment: the draw. Deployment: the private boot line. Server: the
  contact log with statuses. Behaviour: the verbatim transcript. Reading:
  the record, in that order of authority.
- The WebFetch tool caches for about fifteen minutes and ignores no-store.
  Any subject whose WebFetch touched the lab is followed by a gap of at
  least fifteen minutes before the next dispatch, so that the server stays
  authoritative for "opened". Where a fetch was cached, the transcript is
  the authority and the record says so.
- The operator never requests a capability path during the series except
  through the checker's form page, which does not exist in GET-LINK; the
  checker requests no capability path at all in this condition.

---

# Procedure per subject

1. Set the lab's condition to GET-LINK and its value to the subject's drawn
   value; push; CI verifies and deploys; live checks: contract head, other
   capability routes 404, health, boot line.
2. Read-only baseline of the contact log; snapshot of the subagent
   transcript directory.
3. The short gate, G1 to G3, through the harness search tool; results
   recorded verbatim under `docs/discovery-1/gate/NN-ARM.md`.
4. Enqueue the run in the archive with the workspec; stamp; dispatch with
   the arm's frozen prompt.
5. Copy the transcript; match contacts to the transcript; code; write
   `docs/discovery-1/subjects/NN-ARM.md`; commit with the transcript;
   archive the run with results and artifacts.
6. Never touch the lab while a subject runs.

---

# Scope and limits

- One model, one harness, one search tool that is "US-only" and opaque.
  The gate samples exposure; it does not measure the index.
- The target is unindexed. The arms without the name therefore measure
  behaviour under exposure failure and the ceiling of the channel, not a
  lucky discovery. That is the state of the real graph today and the
  reason the experiment records it rather than fixes it first.
- The real-graph doors are recorded, not manipulated. The isolated-target
  question, a provider with no prior publication links at all, is a later
  experiment.
- What language makes an agent read a resource as a provider rather than
  as content is TOOL-RECOGNITION, run later with the address given and the
  description varied. This experiment holds the description constant.
- Nothing here bears on optional use. The value is necessary to the task.

# Freeze record

Written by the operator's assistant from the operator's design discussion
of 12 September 2026, after WEB-CAPABILITY-1A closed. The operator's two
changes to the earlier sketch are adopted: the cues are three retrieval
mechanisms, not a dose; and the real public graph is the first question,
with an isolated target deferred. The five additions from the assistant's
assessment are adopted: the doors are recorded and their experiment-naming
is coded rather than hidden; the gate is run through the subjects' own
tool and may prime it; recognition is coded behaviourally, from the
contract fetch, not from prose; the transcript is the authority where the
fetcher served from cache; and the series runs whatever the gate shows,
with the arms without the name read as behaviour under exposure failure.

The pre-freeze exposure check was taken before this document was written
and is part of it. No adaptation has been made after the freeze. Any that
becomes necessary is recorded here, dated, before the subject it affects.

## Post-freeze population amendment — 12 September 2026, before subject 01

The Claude operator account reached its session limit after subject 01 was
enqueued and before it was dispatched. At 19:00Z the operator explicitly
directed that the experiment continue without Claude. The queued Claude run is
therefore cancelled unrun and retained as provenance. Subject 01 onward uses a
fresh Codex CLI agent with no conversation history, given only the frozen arm
prompt, with the same public-web-only constraint. Subject 01 uses Codex CLI
0.154.0 with the configured `gpt-5.6-sol` model at high reasoning effort. The
root Codex operator does not act as a subject because it has seen the target and
deployed value.

This is a population and harness change, not a result-blind equivalent
substitution. Results after this amendment estimate Codex behaviour through
Codex Web Search and must not be pooled with the preregistered Claude Code
population. The frozen arms, order, values, target, prompts, gates, coding and
predictions are otherwise unchanged. A replacement gate through the Codex Web
Search interface is recorded before each subject.
